Once the bio-balls start working (bacteria colonies grow) you'll be fine. Have you seen "barley pads" they have them at www.gardeners.com? Can't vouch for them as it is my first year using them.
But even with a huge filter, you'll still need partial water changes, especially if you get a lot of sun. You can use your pump to drain some water out, that usually helps clear mine up.
