The common response here is the size of the head, once a day. I also read recently:
In the wild, these turtles eat food that is simply not very concentrated, nutritionally. Therefore, they have to eat nearly all day to get the amounts of nutrients they need. In captivity, food is much more concentrated and they don't need nearly as much...but instinct still tells them to eat all day. That's why they appear hungry all the time.
