How often do I feed?

I read back on a message thread about not giving in to begging. My turt (about 1.5 inches long) has learned to beg. He comes to the corner where a feed and frantically swims until he gets my attention. At first I thought it was cute but I think he is eating too much now. How often should I feed a 1.5 - 2 inch RES?
I usually feed twice a day. Morning about 4-5 pellets and evening about 4-5 pellets. Lately due to the begging, I've been suckered into feeding him a couple of more pellets late at night or midday.
