What's pyramiding?

its when a turtle or a tortoise gets what looks like a pyramid in each scute. some of my turtles have it :( I think its because I fed them too much protein and they grew too fast When it first starts it the whole shell just looks lumpy but when they get bigger they look more like pyramids. why do you ask?
