Five minutes is the average. Adult RES's can go as long as 15 minutes. During sleep stages the respratory system slows about 65% from normal. This allows adults to remain under for more than 3 hours. Hibernation is different. The turtle begins by finding a soft muddy bottom to work into, this is after heavy feeding. They will bury as deep as one foot down. As the ground cools with the water the heart rate and breathing close down to around only 3%. Just enough to sustain brain function and heart stability. This process takes about three weeks from start to finish. Once ground temperatures reach 55 to 65 degrees, the turtles re-awake and reverse the process.
:how long can a RES hold its breath under water when they are about the size of a silver dollar? thanks, turtleyman kevin
