Sounds to me like your friend is the one who is doing wrong and overfeeding his turtles. 4 inches (I assume these were hatchlings like an inch long when you got them) is way to much growth for a turtle in such a short period of time. Your diet for yours sounds good. Lots of UVB light for basking and don't worry -- if he is active and eating and the shell is nice and hard he will have his growth spurts. Find out how much your friend is feeding his turtles. They are growing way too fast!!
