RES are not the best turtle to start with as they get very large and need a lot of room. The rule of thumb is 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle, and females can grow to be 12 inches long. There are a lot of species that are as easy to care for as a RES but stay much smaller. Try www.austinsturtlepage.com he has a lot of good information on there.
