::the rule of thumb for the water is double the width of it's shell 1-2 inches maybe

:i have two baby res's about the size of a half dollar as well and they are in about 8-10 inches of water with basking area that is both underwater and then parts out of the water, and they LOVE IT!!! My one hyper res loves 'dive bombing' things in the water and my more laid back one loves to sit and watch from one of the underwater 'seats' on the basking area :) i say, give them lots of water since they have fun in it as long as you have a good baking area for them to get out of the water.

what does your basking area look like/made out of? mine still refuses to get out of the water. he just hangs on the plants all day and sleeps.
