He knew it was not harmless, but I don't think he thought it was going to kill him.

In a book published not long before his death, co-authored with Robert F. Inger (something along the lines of "Living Reptiles of the World", but I don't have it in front of me), he did describe boomslangs as "probably the only colubrid that can be dangerous to man". He got bitten while trying to key out a specimen, which he assumed to be a boomslang, but which had a scalation anomaly that he was curious about.
