While it is possible to have a heat pad placed on one side of the enclosure to heat that side, it's not recommended to use that as the basking spot. For one, heating pads don't get as warm as lamps do. If they do, something is wrong, and you don't need to be using that pad anyway. Putting something that would get that warm against glass or something similar would probably burst it because of the constant fluctuations in temps. All this aside, FWCs don't seem to really need a particular basking spot really. They aren't lizards and don't need UV light to digest properly. As long as the ambient temperature of the room or at least the enclosure is maintained constantly they should do just fine. Also, avoid "hot rocks." I personally can't even believe those things are still in use, but they are just about the most dangerous to your pet that you can put into a cage.
