of this? lol. It's been easier when there's people like you, KJ, Terry Cox, Daryl Camby, and my partner and mentor Del Alspaw. I learned scientific names of snakes because when I would talk snakes with Del, he would jump all over me if I talked about a snake and didn't know the scientific name. I never thought I could learn any (being as old as I am). Del gave me a copy of the snakes native to California with their scientific name after he got me my first snake. It was a bullsnake and not even native to California. He told me to carry it (the list not the snake) around with me and start using the the scientific names. Everytime I would see him (we work at the same company) he would ask to see that darn list. At first I called it the stupid or dumb list, til I realized I was the stupid or dumb one. He would also say the common name of a California snake and ask what's the scientific name. Wouldn't you know he knew them all without looking. Of course, he could say any thing that sounded latin and I would go with that. I checked on my list to see if he was cheating. He was right everytime. Terry Cox loves questions so I got to fire all kinds in his direction. He helped and taught me alot. The first time he helped me was when he posted some pics of the first clutch of Bullsnakes. He posted them on the Pituophis forum for me. Daryl talks and talks and talks and talk, lol. you have to absorb something with all the sound waves going around your head. Then after he tells you something, he sends you copies of the material where the information and data are located. So I get to hear the lecture and then a few days later, I read the material. It's great. Of course Shannon, you bring up the learning and writing skills out of an old man. It's tough enough on younger people, I don't know how you and Terry Cox do it. BTW - every species gets an earthquake now and then. The bairds thread was only an after shock from the earlier scientific name change of Elaphe to (let me think for a minute because I just got Elaphe down)Pantherophis. I guess I will have to use it, but I don't have to like it. Now there's KJ. That southerner really loves snakes and has information and an opinion on just about anything. Someday, I may actually send him an e-mail where he won't say something about it that is wrong or not technically right or some abstract view that it's wrong. If he plays horseshoes, there's only scores when you throw a wringer (sp) because there's no points or scores for being close. We'd all probably end up throwing the horseshoes at each other over some tidbit of information that KJ won't budge on. But, every piece of information is as important as any of the rest. I guess he fights for the tidbits and you're not right if you don't know it or have it incorrectly. Well, I better write some more on the spec sheet before KJ says he didn't realize he didn't have to send the info he right away. I sent him some info too. It was late of course. Had to get threw KJ's comment on that before he got to the info I sent. lol Thanks for the thread everyone.
::There is a writing book with that title, and as I am an old man (but not as old as you Terry), I can't remember who the author was. But that's what I do regularly to keep my poor writing skills honed. I write to learn the topic that is ruminating in my head at that moment--about one or two a year is all I can muster. Sometimes it helps me clarify a project or internalize the material. Once material is internalized it belongs to me. I don't have to look it up; I don't have to memorize it. It's mine!
::Good job with the bairdi information. It is becoming internalized, and you've shared it with us. Despite the slight earthquake in bairdiland, this was a good thread. Thanks.
