Remember lumping implies closeness too. If we split the ratsnakes, so that there are only a few in each genus, then it'll be hard to tell what a ratsnake is. We'll have tons of genera we call ratsnakes, rather than a bunch of species.
After having said that, I agree that renaming many of the American rats into Pantherophis is a good idea. Now we have Senticolis, Bogertophis, Pantherophis, and I believe Pseudoelaphe (for flavirufa), giving us a number of genera to go with Pituophis, Lampropeltis, Arizona, etc. Who's to say which genera are the most closely related. It boils down to quite a bit of subjectivity, imho, and it's good we have common names too..haha.
