Here is a specimen I turned up in Jefferson county. Compared to the specimen I will post from adjacent Bullitt county, this critter is very light and retains a lot of it's pattern. This young snake is about 36 inches long, so he will darken up some. I have a couple of older Jefferson county specimens in my collection that are pretty darn black. Just like everything else that hails from our glorious Commonwealth, our black rat snakes are not only some of the best, they are also highly variable, versatile, and tough. This is because they have to be to survive our climatic conditions which in my short lifetime have provided a low of -32 degrees F and a high of 120 degrees F. K.E.
