I read your post again, it sounds like you have had multiple specimens off and on over the years. Sorry I did not recognize that when I first read it.
The prey size is still my first suspicion as I have had several forms of Coluber/Masicophis take rodent prey. The babies can be difficult however. Beyond normal scenting practices, I have had success with putting live rat or mice pinks into the snakes hide box. I believe I have gotten a few stubborn Colubers and Masitcophis to eat this way. I believe Masticophis is known to enter rodent burrows and eat the juveniles so it is no surprise this works.
