: : I have been very intrigued by the beautiful appearance of Speckled Racers(Drymobius Margartiferus). I have read that their diet usually consists of invertibraes, but I have heard of them being weaned to mice. Are their any breeders out their? I'd really like to get one, preferably a captive bred juveneil that is already feeding on mice that doesn't object to being handled.

Sorry- you won't likely get the handling part from any racer. They are by nature nervous and nippy. As for the eating, I got lucky- my half-grown wild caught Honduran import came out of the box hungry and ate a pinky hours later. In the 1-1/2 yrs I've had him, he's only eaten mice; now up to 3 fuzzies a week. Most eat goldfish or lizards. They 'dump' often due to the rapid metabolism, so keeping the cage clean is a chore. I handle mine at least twice a week, and he's still very fast and thrashes until I get him up & out in my hands, then he settles down for his cage cleaning... but I NEVER slack off my hold! Mine doesn't bite, and they aren't large snakes as adults but they are very capable of laying your finger open- the teeth are fairly long & serrated on the back like a breadknife. Bill Gillingham has one at Great Valley Serpentarium but I'm not sure if he breeds them. If you get one, give him a BIG cage and a chicken-roasting pan with about 2" of water. Mine drinks a lot and sometimes soaks. He also climbs a lot on small branches in his cage while hunting.
