Q: Sonora[n] whipsnake (Masticophis bilineatus)

Many, many years ago I briefly had a Sonora[n] whipsnake (Masticophis bilineatus). Unfortunately I lost this spectacularly beautiful, gentle giant (nearly 7'!) shortly after I received it to some undiagnosed health problem.

A few questions, in case anyone knows: Is is common for these snakes (especially wild caught) to be lap-dog tame, or was this behavior (as I suspect) more likely related to the animal's poor health or old age? Other masticophis I've kept have been universally nervous and nasty.

Is it common for these snakes to grow so large, or was this a freak? Does anyone know where I might obtain one (or more), since as far as I know, *nobody* breeds these snakes?
