I would make sure that it had a macro feature, b/c that really makes closeup shots really spectacular if you have the right lighting, etc. Good zoom, rechargeable batteries are nice...I've noticed that I would like to be able to turn my autofocus off at times, so you may want to look at that. Just depends on what you are willing to spend. The more you dish out, the more features you get...I would say stick with something by Nikon, but I'm a little biased...I have the coolpix 2500, but am already looking at getting rid of it and getting a 4500 for more features...guess even cameras aren't safe from being outgrown.
