Dragonshoe,
Very rarely are the turtles in pet shops captive bred. Think about what breeders would have to charge if they had to house and feed turtles for 4 and 5 years to get them up to legal shell size. On top of that, most of the pet shops today are mega store franchises. These stores get all of their product from the corporation. The more you buy the lower the wholesale price. The reason that Painteds and RES are only $12 to $20 at the pet shop is because they were wild caught. If you pick up a herp magazine. There all kinds of live turtle trap manufacturers selling their wares.
The real crime is how the pet shops house the turtles, I've seen 20 sub-adult and adult RES and Painteds all stuffed in a 20G tank with 3" of water. At a mall pet shop there was an adult female RES in a 10G tank with no lights and an inch of water that had to be 2 weeks old. There were more feces than water. Then they sell them to people who don't have a clue about turtles. Sorry, I'm ranting here. I could go on for hours. But I'll stop now.
Checker.
