Which Painted is the best?

I haven't kept southerns, but some folks say they are the most docile and possibly not quite as active as the other subspecies. Other than that, the southerns have a dorsal stripe that is not present in the midland.

If you ever think there is a remote possibility that you might one day want a nice backyard pond with your turtles in it, your climate could support easterns or midlands well, with a properly built pond. I would shy away from southerns in such a northern area, but the other two would do fine.
