Where I work in South Philadelphia there is a park consisting of 5 man-made lakes, ballfields, picnic areas, a public golf course, and a walking trail around the lakes. It used to be all wetlands until somebody had a better idea around fifty years ago.
At the drainage end of the biggest lake, all kind of debris clog up the outlet. Mostly trash, bottles and cans, tires, furniture, lumber, and some tree branches. But in the midst of all this ugliness, it's also one of the only places where the turtles can bask.
On Thursday, April 3rd, with the temperature in the 50's. I counted 4 Painteds, 2 Spotteds, and 1 RES. None of them over 5 inches. Basking away on the tires, the wood, a deflated football, a tangle of chicken wire, all in the cool sunshine. Sorrounded by a sea of garbage. Amazing.
