If the gravel is the small kind of fish gravel I'm thinking of, then you should remove it. Painteds and RES are famous for eating gravel if it is smaller enough to fit into there mouth. The gravel then impacts there system and can kill them. You should upgrade to a bigger size subtrate so they can't eat it.
