Matts1985-- They mate as soon as they come out of hibernation...or any time the males can catch the females! But in my experience, the females are only "receptive" to mating in the early spring. (Just because they are mounting doesn't mean that copulation is actually taking place.) In Minnesota, eggs are laid in early June. So...this means that the eggs that are fertilized this year are the ones that will be laid next year...or later. --Maxx
