Yeah try to move teh turtles in the direction they were going (the opposite side of the road) since otherwise they will just continue and get hit by a car after you (i know this may seem silly and even insulting to say but i have heard a zillion stories of peopr who were proud to have put a turtle "back" when it was crossing the road)

As far as the trance thing goes, i think it has only been reported in sea turtles. It ISpossible to disturb a nesting semi-aquatic turtle and cause her to stop laying. Some people think this can lead to problems with laying in the future. Sometimes people report walking in on their captive nesting females with the result that the females later drop the eggs in the water, having never returned to nesting activities.
