:I would like to do rescue work for reptiles on the east coast and would like to know if there is anything I need to do to make it happen or do I just start. I would love it if anyone could help me out! Thanks
If you are in NJ, you will need to file for a 'pet store' permit with Fish Game and Wildlife. Because so many reptiles are considered exotics, you need to be able to give out temporary permits for adopters.
If you plan on accepting monetary donations, it's probably a good idea to apply for non profit status.
We are in the process of getting our 'official' status as a rescue, and we have our NJ permit, are registered as a corporation in NJ, have filed for our non-profit status, and will probably file as a NJ charity once we get out NP status.
Hope this helps
