info on getting a pet turtle

I'd really like a small turtle but don't know anything about them. I am also VERY concerned with the welfare of animals and would be really upset if I hurt it because I don't know how to care for them. Where can I go for info? What kind should I get? Should I get two for company? Do they need a big aquarium? Help! I'm 36 and live in PA, in the Princeton/Philly area.
