Some turtles do NOT need a permit. For instance I have Eastern Painteds and these native species require no permit. I checked the laws (accessible through NJ Herp Society website) and saw they were exempt. See if your species are exempt, or ask here, or feel free to e-mail me and I will try to help.
I e-mailed the Division of Fish, Game & Wildlife to ask about red-eared sliders (they DO need permits) and they responded the next day. I was surprised with the quick response!

::Do you need a permit for every species of turtle you have or just one permit to have turtles in general? Or do you need a permit for every turtle you have even if they are all the same species? How do you go about getting a permit? Thank you for any help in advance.
