Snappers are usually non-aggressive, hanging out at the bottom of the lake/pond, luring fish or feeding on dead stuff. I think they eat vegetation too.
That is true that it takes a very long time for them to reproduce and the mortality rate for hatchlings is very high, as with other wild turtles.
They are wonderful creatures, one of my favorite turtles, and should not be treated like they are disposable or something. Otherwise, they will become a threatened or endangered species.
