Each snake individually didn't destory the environment but the laws are there to protect the snakes. The first time you were stopped and fined should have been your wake-up call to stop taking animals illegally. Yet you did it again and again and again.

If you want to study them go out in the wild with a camera. It's selfish to take home every animal a person wants to "study" or watch or whatever. Or do what most people do when they want to see wild animals: turn on one of the Discover channels on TV.

$1,700 is alot of money, but sadly it still hasn't taught you a lesson. Please reconsider this idea you have that wild snakes of any kind are okay to catch and bring home. Perhaps you could promise not to do it again and throw yourself on the mercy of the court, and maybe a sypathetic judge would reduce the fines. The law is the law, and unless you want more fines you're going to have to accept it.
