I would go to court.... You are not required to have a permit to own gartersnakes.... However the way you aquired them is illegal..... It is also wrong..... The best way to study these animals is in their own invironment.... A wild caught snake does not act as it would in captivity.... I have never had a problem while herping in NJ and I have been doing it for about 15 yrs.... I go only armed with a snake hook and a camera.... No back pack or pillow cases.... If you have nothing to carry them in you cant take them.... Also stay away from state parks.... Try to herp on private or township property.... Good luck and have fun herping....
