Snake identification ?

Yesterday, I was walking by the D & R canal in Rocky Hill. I saw a large, very dark, grey snake on the path. It was happily curled up and made no effort to move. It was more than two feet long, had a large girth (say 4 inches) and bulged as if it was recently fed. It resembled a section of auto tire and was by far the largest snake I've seen in 10 years in Jersey.Does anyone know what kind of snake it might have been?
