: hi my iguana has salmonella and is on a drug called baytril for 3 weeks . then he will go back for 2nd fecal test to see if drug killed the salmonella. i dont understand how he got it hes 3 years old eats well vet said he was healthy, has vinyl floor covering on bottom of cage disinfect cage always poops in my bathtub and i take him out quik after he poops dont understand how he got it . hope it goes away in 3 weeks see ya. if you see your pet has diarrhea its probaly from salmonella or parasites its not from the food hes eating its most likely he has one of the above illnesses take him to the vet asap before he gets really ill. glad i caught it fairly quik mike

HI Mike,
Salmonella exists naturally in the gut of many reptiles without doing harm. It could be that something happened to cause the natural balance of gut flora and fauna to go out of whack and the salmonella took over. Same thing happens with humans with e. coli. A very experienced iguana mommy on another list found out that orange fleshed(winter) squash beyond a certain amount in the diet caused her iguana to have soft stools.
