Salmonella exists naturally in the gut of many reptiles without doing harm. It could be that something happened to cause the natural balance of gut flora and fauna to go out of whack and the salmonella took over. Same thing happens with humans with e. coli. A very experienced iguana mommy on another list found out that orange fleshed(winter) squash beyond a certain amount in the diet caused her iguana to have soft stools.
