Jake and Donnie went to kindergarten!

Hi All!

Well, I can report that we had complete success today at the
kindergarten! I took Jake in the morning and Donnie in the afternoon,
since the kids only go half days. We spent about 15 minutes in each
class, basically just telling the kids a little about iguanas, comparing
them to other reptiles, talking about what they eat, etc. The kids had
a lot of questions, and they got a chance to pet the igs if they wanted,
which most did. I stressed the need to wash their hands afterwords, and
they all obediently went straight to the sink after touching the igs.

I gave them a little handout that I wrote up. On one side it had
iguana facts, written as if the iguana was telling them about itself
(Where do I live?, What do I eat?, Why am I called "Giant"?, Why do I
need to go out in the sun?, Am I friendly?, Am I dirty?). Of course,
the information was pretty sparse, but I was basically hoping that if
they went home and told Mom and Dad about the cool iguana they saw, and
told them how they want one, Mom and Dad will read the handout and say
"I don't think so". On the other side of the handout I put one of
Emma's iguana clip arts (the one of the ig sleeping in the tree) and I
used my computer to take out the color so that it created a picture for
the kids to color. When I left, they were all industriously coloring
their iguanas. It was cute. Despite the fact that they had a real-live
green-orange ig in front of them, I saw many kids coloring their igs
purple, red and blue. What creativity! :)

Jake and Donnie were really quite good. They were fairly calm and
well-behaved, with a few squirming bouts now and then. Donnie tried to
climb onto my head, much to the delight of the kids. She managed to
rearrange my 'do and put a nice scratch too close to my eye for
comfort. Other than that small incident though, all went well.
Considering Donnie's skittish disposition, I was very pleased. They
each got a whole piece of bread as a treat when they were done (usually
they split a piece). Maybe I'll get invited back again some time.
Anyhow, I just wanted to share our adventure!
