Unfortuatly a lot of these animals are considered "burrowers" They really enjoy and feel safe in the dirt or under a log. There's not much you can do short of removing all places to hide. But the problem, this makes them unhappy. They really love it, it's what they do. Its like buying a clam and then being sad he never leaves his shell. I have fire salamanders they they almost always sit under leaves or hide in the moss or under logs. Some animals though are more adventurous then other. As I said, my critters always hide, but one sometimes comes out.
The problem is there are nocturnal for the most part. While you sleep they like to hunt. Most movement occurs at night.
I think that's why they hide so much. Sorry!
:I have a pair of barred tiger salamanders in a 40 gallon terrarium with about 4 inches of soil as a substrate and live plants. I keep Eastern's as well in the same type of setup and while they have made burrows, they come out frequently and can be seen roaming the terrarium. My barred on the other hand never come out. They are healthy and have great appetites, they just never come up to the surface. Which to my way of thinking defeats the purpose of owning them. Any suggestions as to how to make them viewable?
:Thanks
