55 gallons would be a paradise for two axolotls, assuming you're not adding any other species or gravel (unless the pebbles are larger than their heads). it's very standar to keep two (same size, adult) axys in a 10 gallon, i admire those who provide larger habitats. also- to anyone else- females are occasionally capable of changing sex, when in a group exclusively of other females. so keeping them in groups will not guarantee that the females won't mate. they usually don't do this, but they are capable (i don't have the reference on hand, but i think it's from Armstrong & Malacinski's Dev bio book on axolotls. also, with a tank that size, i think it's unecessary to separate them via screen when they eat, but it certainly won't hurt. what morphs are you planning on getting? i (right now) have a leucistic, normal/wildtype green, and normal/wildtype black. their names are googly, tripod, and fuzzy puff ( i know, ridiculous for someone my age, but the names fit...).
