Yes, you could say that. Scent seems to dictate to them what is edible or not. It's more difficult for you and me to state that they're "carrion" eaters because we have taught our snakes to eat dead (fresh or thawed) whole and peices of fish. But scavenging for food? I suspect wild snakes would happily take freshly dead or dying fish! Mine however will not touch anything that is "spoiling".
