Here's a not-very-good panorama of the habitat where I found the transversa below. Swan Lake NWR, central missouri.
Erythrogaster are woodland species, at least up here. This one looked like it had hibernated with at least 2 garter snakes, as they were found at the same spot. The hole they had come from was full of water at about 12 inches below the surface, and the snake had mud on it.
It was about 76F.
