I find that the biggest problem with allowing my snakes to shed entirely on their own is that the humidity is not nearly high enough. This can be raised a couple of days prior to shedding. Just watch for mould/mildew and don't let the snake remain damp!
As for high metabolism, it's based on temperature, etc. as well as the individual snake. However, like us it does not mean that his bowel will always or ever be empty. A warm bath will inevitably cause them to deficate - they don't poop on the toilet, they poop in it!
