The best place to check for mites on a snake is around the eye and between the scales under their chin. Another good way to check for mites is to run your hands down the length of the snake's body and then look for mites on your hands. As far as treatment, their are several products that can easily be purchased over the internet. I have heard good things about Black Knight but I haven't ever used it myself. I've used a clay-based bedding that was specifically designed for desicating mites and their eggs but because it is so dry, I wouldn't use it on a baby Nerodia.
