I have probably posted this before, but I thought it would post it again for those that have not seen it.
Waters actually have the ability to shed their tails to some degree. Remember this while tailing large specimens and grasp firmly closer to the vent. Do not grab the tail tip or they WILL shed it. This startled me so much when it first happened and I thought I had broken the poor thing lol.I adressed a few sources which did say that Nerodia have been found to shed their tails in many instances, one of which is Chris Mattison's Encylcopedia of Snakes or whatever the hell it is called. On a seperate note, Scott and I found a nice sized blotched today. He spotted it on the bank and I got in the shin deep water and pulled it out of the reeds. It was in shed and was rather lethargic.
