I have a water softener too, actually a water purification system. Like most water softeners it uses a brine tank. I have read that you shouldn't use this for reptiles because of the salts but I have and am not aware of any ill effects yet. If you want to make sure then you can get a Britta pitcher or purchase distilled water for Bob.
In answer to your question on impaction I am wondering what you are using for substrate and do you feed Bob from a bowl or does he catch crickets that are loose? If he is chasing and eating crickets if is possible that he is taking in some substrate when he catches the cricket. If this is the case you can change this by simpley pinching off the back legs and feeding from a bowl.
A great souce of health information can be found on Melissa Kaplan's web site at http://www.anapsid.org/mainhealth.html. You will find a list of health topics here and the one you need to look at first is http://www.anapsid.org/constipation.html.
I sure hope he is just fat from eating too much and not impacted.
