Thanks, everyone. I've concluded that while my original idea of building around the already existing cages might be doable and economical space-wise, it's not ideal for the lizard. I have room elsewhere to build a larger, more adequate cage (well, first I have to move some bookshelves and add supports in the basement so his cage doesn't go through the floor!), and if I decide to get a Black Throat, that's the plan I'll go with. I appreciate everyone's input (and feel free to keep it coming; it's helps to hear the voices of experience).
