In Reply to: Finally getting a BT!! posted by timopar on May 05, 2003 at 14:11:22:

He is underweight but in good conditions he will recover and get big!! Watch which books you get info from when reading, most monitor books are very bad and recycled outdated info. King and Greens monitor book is good, Daniel Bennetts new book is one of the best on monitor care (the savannah book). There are a few others but they dont have captive care thats any good.
The cage size is good for now because BTs get big and grow fast. As for temps use multiple light assemblies (to produce a basking spot that is snout to vent length), next use outdoor flood (not spot) light bulbs (from 18-20+ inches they produce 130+degree spots), they are about $5 at Home Depot etc., and are very durable, as well as a hot area with as little wattage as possible so you dont dry the cage out and dehydrate the animal (I only use 45 watt bulbs, 3 of them for now, 4 for the next cage I build for a longer basking spot).
The calm idea is deceptive because alot of calm monitors are not healthy at all they are sick and cannot defend themselves so they gave up, you will have to find out which the case is. Get him/her heated, hydrated, fed, adjusted, to a vet, and eating good before you will know. An albig in general has a nasty tail whip, they usually hiss before hand. They usually dont bite , but some will and bite very hard and hang on, and twist or rip after. They can do alot of damage if they bite!!!
Good luck your monitor will teach you alot if you know what he is trying to tell you. BTs love to eat and alot so feed mice, chicken peeps, rats, roaches, as whole animals as foods are far superior to anything else. Email anytime and Ill try to answer anything, if you want Ill email a pic of the basking light design that works great, email me Ill send it to ya, its cheap to make and easy.
