::i caught my first Eastern Milk today!!! i was so excited. i got in my car and ran to tell my girlfriend, but then i saw an Eastern Garter someone had just hit. i stopped and got it. it was still breathing and moving around, but it didn't make it. one minute i was so pumped up and then i felt like crying. i live in Bedford County, Virginia. anybody have any luck with wild Eastern Milks? i want to keep it, but if it doesn't eat i'll have to let it go. what's the best thing to try and feed it? how long should i wait before feeding it? thanks for the advice and enjoy the pic!

:Hi Greg, I remember my first Eastern milksnake like it was yesterday. I am happy for you. I have had lots of luck with Eastern Milks, and can tell you that yours is very nice. This time of year can be tough for feeding if the snake is a male. Some males will not eat until the breeding urge dies down. I do not feel there is any magic number of days to wait before offering the snake a meal. As soon as it appears settled into its new home you should offer it a small hopper, and hope for a good response. Try live hoppers first, and if it starts eating well you can switch it to pre killed mice. My experience with Easterns has been that snakes that started eating within days after capture have made great captives with only ocassional periods of fasting. (COMMON FOR EASTERNS) The ones that didn't feed for weeks, and weeks never settled in and made good captives. Releasing these animals as soon as possible is best.
:Good luck, and let us know how it works out.

thanks so much! i'll keep you posted.
