I usually start babies on Aspen. It's cheap and easy to clean. After they are about a year I move them to newspaper. I usually use dog food bowls for water - the kind with the cutouts on the sides. Then it serves as a hide box as well. You should only need a single hide. As far as heat, as long as your room is 70-80 degrees you won't need any supplemental heat.
Here's a picture of my adult male, or at least most of him. He's over 6 feet long.
