Infra red temp guns are hard to compare to probe type thermometers. The infrared guns measure radiated heat. Not air temp. They will give you a rough idea of the surface temp but I have found them to vary greatly and they seem to have no repeatable relationship to air temp depending on what you are pointing them at.
An example is take a piece of heat tape and plug it in. Put a piece of that aluminum foil tape over a piece of it. Plug it in.
When it gets warm feel the tape. it will feel warm. Now point the gun at it. The tape somehow stops the gun from working. it will read way colder than it really is. And it will read the bare heat tape as way hotter because it is radiating alot of heat but the actual surface temp is no where near what it reads.

:an infared temp gun i bought at radioshack for $50. This may seem a little expensive for a thermometer, but when you have multiple tanks, trust me its worth it. Look around, you can usually find some good digital therms on ebay.
