I had some of my racks custom built by Matrix Vivarium systems in boston, not sure he's still building, anyway I had them sized to accommodate slightly larger Cambro food service trays that are hard, clear plastic. So you CAN see what's going on inside.
Although most are 6" trays, I also included two 9" trays in each rack of seven, in order to keep my males in those larger trays: I intro females to males, in those trays, and with the larger clear fronts and with them located roughly at eye level, it's easy to scan for activity while i'm working in the room.
There's merit, of course, in your larger-cages-for-females, because my hondo females are certainly larger than the males on average. But I'm not sure what diff it makes to a larger snake to have 9" headroom instead of 6", if the footprint of the tray is still the same size.
