i think you expressed it just fine.
visually, baby ghosts are immediately & obviously distinguishable from mere anerys becuase where the anery is jet black, say the tip of the snout, the ghost is greyish-purple, or gray-brown. As the ghost ages the skin thickens, the gray areas darken, and it CAN be hard to tell a mature ghost from a mature anery, though almost all ghosts will have considerably cleaner wide rings (the ones that would be red on a normal) and less black tipping.
we haven't seen really, really good ghosts yet: when ghosts that are anerys and "super hypos" start being produced, the differences will be even more pronounced and i think the "black" rings of the anery will be pale flesh color on baby ghosts and not darken to more than medium gray on adults. But we're gonna have to wait a couple years to see for sure.
