...there isn't any harm in helping. Sometimes snakes realize what's going on and cooperate, but sometimes it's too "violating", and snakes get rather cranky when you go pulling its skin off. But as long as you pull gently in the right direction, it's fine.
I kinda like to help, personally. All of my snakes don't give me a chance much anymore, but I can do a better job of getting the very tip of the tail off than they can. Not to be a weirdo, but it's like a bonding moment.
