The fireplace is gas, so it never really heats up like a wood fire can. The warmest it would get was around 55-60. The snakes started getting really listless, and I think most of them went into a brumation-type state. After the electricity came back on several days later, it took some of them a few weeks to "wake" back up and start eating normally again.
:By the look of the snakes, they knew which end was warmest!! Good thing you had a fireplace! We have 2 in our house, and use one during the winter.
