First of all I don't think that breeding natural intergrades would be mutts?
As far as them being seperate sub-species I think we will see a change in a couple years.There was far to much splitting of hairs with too small amounts of specimens.

If you look at 6the range maps the (true) nelsoni are found in a very small range and overlap with arcifera and siniloans.

I have always thought that what they call nelsoni are just siniloans showing some of the jalisco influence?Thats just my thought and nothing more.
Anyways,there are so many central american milks that overlap I don't know if we will ever get it straight?
